Starting with the innocent purchase of a set of 35mm slides - a collection of an anonymous family's memories - Midcentury Memories is the culmination of a project undertaken by filmmaker Lee Shulman.
Taken by what Shulman calls "the emotional value of these slices of life", he created The Anonymous Project, and has subsequently sourced 700,000+ Kodachrome slides - each one a glimpse into the mid-century life of his anonymous subjects. This book is a curation of 300 photos from his impressive collection.
From the book's introduction: “It is significant-and fascinating-that in virtually every image here, photographer and subject seem to know one another. In this embracing album of humanity, no one exists in isolation. There are no strangers here.”
